A believer of continuous learning and growth, Flaviu Vanca has accumulated a diverse set of skills throughout his career that transcend any specific industry. In pursuit of expanding his knowledge and abilities, Flaviu came across the Springboard+ initiative, which offers courses co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union with the aim of filling skills shortages in the workforce. At National College of Ireland, we deliver Springboard+ courses in computing covering Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Cybersecurity, Blockchain, Software Development and Web Development.
Since Flaviu had no prior experience in the tech field, he began his journey with the Certificate in Science in Computing as it offers learners an essential understanding of fundamental concepts like programming and databases. After gaining a solid foundation in computing, Flaviu was motivated to take his learning further and opted for the Higher Diploma in Computing, specialising in Software Development.
Flaviu details his path to studying at NCI, providing valuable insights into the course and its benefits including the flexibility of remote learning, in this interview below.

Career Background
My career journey began in Romania, where I took on the role of general operative in a vehicle electrical cable manufacturing factory. In this position, I immersed myself in the production processes, ensuring both quality and efficiency. My responsibilities included managing material restocking and carrying out precise repair tasks. This experience laid a strong foundation for my technical skills and honed my attention to detail, essential traits that have supported me throughout my career.
Seeking new opportunities, I moved to Spain and transitioned into the agriculture sector as a general operative. My new role involved maintaining and constructing agricultural tunnels. This job required meticulous teamwork, precision, and the ability to meet demanding productivity goals. Working in this environment sharpened my problem-solving skills and taught me how to function effectively within a team-oriented setting.
In pursuit of further growth, I relocated to Ireland and continued my career in agriculture. My duties expanded to include spraying crops, picking, packing, and stacking produce. Additionally, I provided translation assistance to colleagues who struggled with English. These responsibilities enhanced my organisational skills and my ability to perform under tight deadlines, further diversifying my skillset.
In 2010, I ventured into the construction sector in Ireland and the UK. Initially working as a general labourer and banksman, I eventually took on the role of a team foreman. My responsibilities included constructing retaining walls and panels, managing procurement, and ensuring strict adherence to project specifications. As a foreman, I closely coordinated with site and project managers to ensure the successful completion of projects. This period was instrumental in enhancing my leadership and project management abilities, as well as deepening my technical expertise in construction.
Educational Background
I attended vocational school in Romania, from 1999 to 2002. During this time, I completed courses in car spray painting and panel beating, graduating with a solid academic record. Although my vocational training was in automotive repair, it provided me with a strong foundation in technical skills and attention to detail that have been valuable throughout my career.
In 2023, I enrolled in the Higher Diploma in Science in Computing specialising in Software Development at National College of Ireland. My coursework includes a range of modules such as Web Design and Client-Side Scripting, Object-Oriented Software Engineering, Algorithms and Advanced Programming, Data Structures, Distributed Systems, and Introduction to Databases. This comprehensive programme has enabled me to develop a robust foundation in computing, and I am committed to advancing my career in the software industry by continuously learning and growing my technical expertise.
Can you share insights into studying this Springboard+ course?
The course was truly engaging, broadening my understanding of various software development methodologies that had previously been unfamiliar to me. It commenced with foundational Java programming, databases, and web development in the first semester. In the second semester, the focus shifted to advanced topics such as distributed systems, algorithms, and data structures, completing the academic year with a comprehensive project. Remote learning offered significant advantages, allowing me the flexibility and comfort of studying from home. Online classes and interactive labs conducted via MS Teams were instrumental in maintaining engagement and facilitating learning.
The blend of continuous assessments and assignments was both challenging and enriching, particularly in fostering collaboration within small groups. One standout component was the project module, where I assumed the role of project manager. This entailed conceptualising a project idea and overseeing its execution from inception to completion. The experience involved not only coding but also comprehensive documentation across all project phases. This module was particularly rewarding as it provided practical insights into project management and teamwork dynamics. This comprehensive programme has equipped me with a robust foundation in computing, fueling my commitment to advancing my career in the software industry through continuous learning and technical growth.
What advice would you give to anyone considering a Springboard+ course at National College of Ireland?
If you're considering the Higher Diploma in Software Development but lack programming experience, I suggest starting with the Certificate in Science in Computing, a 12-week programme for beginners. This recommendation stems from the fact that the Higher Diploma is quite intensive, spanning two semesters with four modules each, culminating in a final project. The programming aspect can be challenging at times so starting with the Certificate allows you to gauge your interest and capabilities. If it turns out not to be the right fit, you'll still earn a certification after completing the shorter course.
