The journey to finding the right CAO course for you can be a challenging one. At National College of Ireland, we're proud to be with you every step of the way of that decision making process. 

Read on to discover how Emily Williamson, Final-Year BA (Honours) in Early Childhood Education and Care student found her true calling at NCI. 

How did you know ECEC was right for you?

ECEC was actually not my first choice on the CAO back, what seems like a lifetime ago, in 2022. I wanted to pursue Psychology in NCI. Points weren't on my side that year, so I accepted an offer to study ECEC in NCI. It was the best decision and the beginning of a life-changing journey!

Why did you choose to study ECEC at NCI?

At the time, I envisioned that ECEC would be a backup plan to support me in pursuing Psychology. I always knew I wanted to work with children, but I was just not sure of what field exactly.

What did you gain from studying ECEC at NCI?

I gained invaluable skills from studying ECEC such as communication and working as part of a team. I was on a work placement for the duration of my Undergrad, and I found it massively beneficial as I was witnessing what I was learning in the classroom in practice.

How did your Capstone Project motivate you?

My Capstone Project motivated me in ways I truly cannot describe. It was such a special and (sometimes stressful) experience. I chose to research a topic extremely close to my heart; Flexible Classrooms, Inclusive Futures.

Choosing something so important to me brought deeper meaning and depth to the process that makes the stressful moments all worthwhile. I would advise any student about embarking on the Capstone Project to choose your topic wisely, think about it carefully, and ensure it means something to you!

You have your degree, what's next?

I am not saying goodbye to NCI just yet! One chapter has closed, but an exciting adventure is about to begin. I am the next Vice President for Welfare and Equality Officer with NCISU. This is something I often thought about throughout my degree as something I would love, as I'm very passionate about supporting people, particularly students.

I don't feel fully ready to start a master's degree right now, but looking ahead to next year, my goal then would be to pursue a master's degree, potentially, in the field of Disability Support.

What advice would you give CAO students considering ECEC at NCI?

If you're not sure if a course is fully for you, but you think that it could be the right step, take the leap and believe in yourself. It will be worth it. Each module, and everything you learn in each class, will support you in developing a wide variety of skills and knowledge.

What advice would you give to all students making the life changing decision to go to college? 

Don't stress, and enjoy making long lasting memories. Everything works out in the end the way it's meant to!
