When it comes to choosing the right CAO course for you, it is important to consider what you are passionate about studying. Your values will inform the qualifications you wish to pursue, and the career you wish to work towards.

At National College of Ireland, our practical courses are designed to give students the qualifications they need to pursue their passions professionally. Ava is one of our students who felt that she was able to follow her passions by choosing the BA (Honours) in Early Childhood Education and Care

Ava shares her experiences and insights into her CAO choices and study journey below.

How did you know ECEC was right for you?

From a young age I have always been drawn to helping young children, whether that was helping the children in primary school with reading as a member of the student council or simply playing pretend school games at home with friends. I know that having an influence on children has always been subconsciously embedded in the back of my mind.

As the Leaving Cert approached, I planned my options and decided to pick a course in Early Education and Care. That was the start of my journey to becoming a professional early year educator. I wanted to become someone in a child's life that they can trust and support their development.

After completing the course at NCI this year, I am aware of many new opportunities that I can avail of. This course at NCI is ideal for anyone who is passionate about shaping young minds.

Why did you choose to study ECEC at NCI?

NCI has a great reputation for delivering practical and hands-on learning for students. Knowing this heavily impacted my decision to choose to study at NCI. The Early Childhood Education and Care course stood out due to its mixture of theoretical learning and hands-on experience, which matched perfectly with my desire to work with young children.

I knew NCI was the right choice for many reasons; the friendly environment, the small class sizes, and the central location of the Dublin campus all played an important role in influencing my decision.

What did you gain from studying ECEC at NCI?

Studying ECEC has been a valuable experience. I have gained a thorough understanding of child development, pedagogy, and the value of inclusive learning. The course material has also taught me practical skills such as creating lessons and assessment strategies and establishing strong connections with children and families. Also, studying ECEC has inspired me to grow academically and continue to develop as an early-year practitioner.

How did your Capstone Project motivate you?

What inspires me the most is the opportunity to positively impact children's lives during their early years. My Capstone project centers around integrating the Irish language into early childhood settings, which reflects my love of cultural heritage and early education.

I believe that by introducing children to the Irish language in a creative and stimulating manner, we can foster a love of learning as well as cultural awareness. I aim to continue working in early childhood education, helping to develop new methods, and potentially exploring additional studies in child development and learning.

What advice would you give CAO students considering ECEC at NCI?

I would like to say that the connections and relationships I formed at NCI have been extremely beneficial. The friendly community, between classmates and educators, has been a pillar of my college education. Do not overlook the value of a positive academic environment; it truly makes a huge difference.

My advice to current students is to choose a course based on their passions and values. Consider what genuinely interests you and fits with your talents. Speak with current students, visit open days, and do not be reluctant to ask questions. If you are passionate about working with young children, this course would be a great opportunity to explore that. Keep in mind that the right course for you is one that prepares you for a career you will appreciate, not just a qualification.
