National College of Ireland has won the Excellence in Employability Award in the AHECS Employment and Engagement Awards 2013, presented at the gradireland Graduate Recruitment Awards last night. The award, given by the Association of Higher Education Career Services, was given for NCI’s work in “Rethinking, reskilling, reinventing – dealing with the challenge of unemployment and career change in challenging times.”

‘A Capital In Conflict: Dublin City and the 1913 Lockout’

Vice Dean of the School of Business at NCI, Colin Whitston, has contributed to a new book ‘A Capital In Conflict: Dublin City and the 1913 Lockout’ which has been published by Dublin City Council to mark the Decade of Commemorations 1913 – 1923. The book features a number of essays covering a wide range of topics relating to the Lockout and contextualising it, including the role of women and children; the Gaelic revival; the proposal for a Bridge Gallery to house the Lane collection of pictures; housing, public health and medicine. The international context is supplied by Mr. Whitston.

It’s Never Too Early To Tackle Educational Disadvantage!

Yesterday was a big day for us at the college. The Early Learning Initiative (ELI) at NCI is close to all of our hearts because of its work with children and families from our local community in the Dublin Docklands. These programmes generally start from age 18 but we believe that to be effective, you have to start when a person is 18 months, not 18 years. By just three years of age, there are already significant differences in the language and mathematical development of children from affluent areas and those from disadvantaged communities. The gap continues to widen if it is not addressed before children start formal education – which is why our early years’ work is so very important for tackling educational disadvantage.
