Early Childhood Education and Care Student Story - Grace

Are you passionate about early childhood education? Grace Viscarra shares her journey from Bolivia to Ireland in this blog post. She shares insights into advancing her career as an educator by studying BA (Honours) in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) at NCI, exploring Ireland’s stunning landscapes, and enhancing her English skills through interactions with Irish local community.

Why did you decide to study abroad in Ireland?

Ireland caught my attention because of the many professional opportunities it offers. It is a multicultural country, with people from all around the world and one of the few English-Speaking countries in Europe which could help me improve my language skills.

Why I Chose to Study ECEC at NCI

I chose to study at NCI because of its city centre location, in the heart of Dublin’s Financial District and Tech Hub, and the promising career prospects it offers for students in Early Childhood Education and Care. I liked the idea of studying in a small class which provides a more focused and personalised learning experience with lecturers and students.

Studying ECEC perfectly aligns with advancing my career goals as an educator. The course allows me to deepen my understanding of early childhood education in Ireland. Offering a practical approach, the programmes give students hands-on experience through work placement from year two onwards. Being in a classroom and engaging directly with young children from a very early stage has given me valuable insights into real-world learning environments that I can compare with my learnings.

Can you share some insights into studying the course?

Classes on the ECEC course are held in NCI’s main building Mayor Square. The schedule is flexible. It gives me the opportunity to balance study, part-time work, and exploring Ireland. The course content is diverse, covering foundations of education, child development theories, pedagogy, and creative modules like arts and crafts. We also have group workshops, which are a great way to collaborate and learn with peers. These workshops involve hands-on activities that bring theoretical concepts to life.

Grace Culture Night

Can you share some fun activities you have been involved in here in Ireland and at NCI?

One of my favorite experiences at NCI was volunteering at the Culture Night Event with Centre for Education and Lifelong Learning (CELL) and Early Learning Initiative (ELI). It was a fantastic opportunity to interact with local children through painting, colouring, and fun activities like LEGO building and block play.

Outside of college, I’ve enjoyed exploring Ireland. Some of my recent trips were to Kylemore Abbey and the Croaghmoyle start point in County Mayo. These places showcase Ireland’s breathtaking views, rich culture, and history.

I am delighted I had the chance to experience it.

Grace Ireland

Do you have any tips or advice for students considering studying abroad in Ireland with NCI?

If you’re considering studying abroad, I strongly encourage you to come to Ireland and live the experience. NCI provides excellent support for students from before you arrive with the Pre-Arrival Programme, during your first few weeks in the country with the Welcome Programme and throughout the year with learning, mental health, and wellbeing supports. These resources have been invaluable during my first year.

Taking the first step might feel overwhelming at first, but it’s worth every bit of effort. You’ll never know what incredible opportunities await unless you take the risk.

So, pack your bags, come to Ireland, and let your adventure begin!
