Looking to kick-start your career in accounting? Discover Xuerui Liu’s journey from China to Ireland, as she decides to take her career in a new direction by studying NCI’s one-year full-time MSc in Accounting and exploring Ireland’s vibrant culture.
Why did you decide to study abroad in Ireland?
I chose to study in Ireland due to its rich cultural atmosphere and inclusive work environment. Ireland has a vibrant cultural scene with a rich history in literature and music which enriches the study and living experience. Great writers like James Joyce and Oscar Wilde hail from Ireland, and I often visited a bookstore named Ulysses in Hangzhou, China. Moreover, Ireland's multicultural, inclusive work environment and global leading companies offers excellent career development opportunities.
Why did you choose to study the MSc in Accounting at National College of Ireland?
With a background in journalism that supported my role in Marketing and Operations, I developed a keen interest in expanding my expertise in Accounting and Finance. NCI has a partnership with Hebei University in China (where I’m from) and through this partnership I became aware of the MSc in Accounting programme at NCI.
Students without prior experience in this field can fast track their career in accountig by joining the programme. Graduates receive professional exam exemptions after completing the course which is a valuable opportunity to advance my professional skill set and transition into the accounting sector.

Can you share some insights into studying the course?
The full-time MSc in Accounting at NCI is designed to fast track graduates toward becoming professional accountants. The curriculum includes essential modules such as Financial Accounting, Taxation, Audit and Assurance, Financial Management, Management Accounting and more. These modules not only deepen our understanding of accounting principles but also enhance our ability to analyse complex accounting challenges independently.
Here are some key projects I’ve been part of so far this year:
- Critical Perspectives in Accounting: In this module, we collaborated on presentations and debates covering topics like the impact of budgets on businesses, how personal philosophy influences learning accounting theory, and whether companies should prioritise corporate social responsibility (CSR).
- Accounting in Practice: We conducted a thorough analysis of Tesco and Sainsbury’s financial health by examining their efficiency, liquidity, and profitability ratios over the past four years. Our research focused on their financial status, operating performance, and cash flow, along with equity structure and strategic decisions. This analysis offered insights into future growth opportunities for both companies from a financial perspective.

Can you share some fun activities you have been involved in here in Ireland and at NCI?
Ireland has so much to offer in terms of beautiful landscapes and culture. One of the highlights has been visiting Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin, where you can really feel the rich history and architecture. I've also loved exploring Ireland’s stunning green spaces, from the lush parks within Dublin to nearby scenic trails, which offer a peaceful escape into nature.
At NCI, the experience has been just as engaging. The NCI Library in Spencer Dock has been a fantastic resource for study and research, providing a quiet place to dive into coursework or personal projects. Plus, as a full-time student, I have free gym membership, which has been great for staying active throughout the semester.
